A Heater Treater's purpose is to break up the water emulsion in the oil phase so that it can separate out to result in a higher oil purity for sale. A Heater Treater is always after at least 1 stage of separation and sometimes 2 stages of separations depending on initial incoming pressure. Heater treaters are meant to be run at low pressures to allow any high-end hydrocarbons to break out. Heater treaters dump directly to the tank or in high gravity crudes to a Vapory Recovery tower or Oil/Condensate Stabilizer. Heater Treaters are also known as Heater Treater, Oil Treater, Emulsion Treater. Heater Treaters prevent sales docks from high water content in the sold oil if operated and sized properly. No one wants to pay oil prices for water. Heater treaters have also been operated at higher than normal operating temperatures to help flash high-end hydrocarbons off of crude pools to aide in reducing RVP in the tanks.
